Excavations in ancient Egypt have proven that bowling is by no means a new game that is just beginning to emerge. She has come a long way in game evolution, as the researchers prove, during her life of 7 thousand years …
Nobody knows the exact reason for the appearance of this game. But there are a lot of assumptions, in one way or another, supported by facts.
The most necessary items during life, as you know, were placed in the tombs of the deceased. Among them, as it turned out, modern archaeologists also find balls with pins – prototypes of modern bowling objects.
There is an assumption that initially there were 9 pins, placed not in the shape of a triangle, as in modern bowling, but in the shape of a diamond. Pieces of marble served as the gate.
Many historians are inclined to assume that the origins of bowling are more recent, and geographically closely related to Germany. Bowling may have been originally created as a religious practice, not as a means of relaxation and personal gain.
Since then, the bowling track surface and the number of pins have changed, but interest in the game has not been lost.
In the 12th century, the British left a trail of bowling in writing that cannot be denied today.
It can be assumed that since the 15th century, bowling began to gain its position among many recognized, well-deserved sports. In England, the so-called bowling alleys were opened, which were available to everyone. Bowling has become “established” in public places.
But not everyone was happy with the development of this type of game. And many fighters for justice tried in every possible way to prohibit it. In the 18th century, bowling was temporarily transformed into a game in which, instead of pins, dug pits were used, the number of which was equal to prohibited pins. This game was renamed “Blow Justice”. The game continued despite the bans.
It should be said that by the 18th century, there were already several types of bowling. Now it is this circumstance that often does not allow researchers to agree on the true origins of bowling.
In America, for example, there were Dutch pins, and in New York Territory there were Bowling Greens. Now, too, there is no single standard that recognizes a specific type of bowling as the only acceptable one. Both 9 pins in the game and 10 pins are recognized.
Like any game, bowling stimulates a person’s sense of excitement. Over time, the desire to win began to be “fed” with monetary “rewards”. This became the reason for the fight against the game and the imposition of the corresponding bowling bans. Then the desperate gamblers decided to bypass the law and “retrained” only externally – they added one more pin. As a result, we continued to play successfully. Around this time, the name of the game took shape – from the English “bowl”, which means “to roll the balls”.
The 19th century is the heyday of bowling. Bowling centers began to appear, the equipment developed. In 1875, the First National Bowling Association (NBA) was formed, which included 27 bowling centers. Since then, certain rules have begun to be spelled out, which have already changed with the permission of various associations involved in the development of this game.
Now bowling is not just a resting place. It is a way to show and prove their skills, which many athletes have been honing over time. There are now over 8,000 bowling centers in the United States. The largest bowling alley with 141 lanes is in Japan.
In Russia, the development of bowling is promoted by the Russian Sports Bowling Federation (FSBR).
